And so do the lives of all other races. The problem facing American society seem to be that those who are in a position where they are able to make laws foe the benefit of all are unwilling to change. The root cause of this is that they do not want to be answerable to their decisions.

Is there any organisation in the US where one can lay a complaint against the police or any other government department?

A government department should not be a law unto themselves; I suspect that an unwillingness to be accountable for their decisions is behind it all.

There needs to be an independent body dealing with complaints and they need t be answerable to their actions.

Politicians say all the right things but need to follow that up with some kind of action.

President Trump has taken a lot of heat over his handling of the “Black lives Matter,” protest but this issue has been going on for decades. Joe Biden has been in politics a long long time and has done nothing to address the issue of racism and the plight of those who are disadvantaged in society. He was a part of Barack Obama’s government during the time of the racial riots that occurred when Obama was president.

Protest organisers need to compile a list of things they want to happen and present it to the President; maybe use it as part of a petition.

“Justice for George Floyd,” has been said often during the protests, which basically mean taking revenge against the officers responsible for his death; I’m not sure if that is what Floyd would have wanted. That alone will not change the plight of Blacks. What will, however, is an acknowledgement from the President that they have not been treated fairly.

What the President and state governors need to do is to tell the people, “This is what we are going to do to change the plight of the disadvantaged,” but I am not holding my breath based on years of inaction and empty words by one government after another. The governments of other countries must put pressure on America for change and say, “This is not right.”

During the apartheid years in South Africa governments around the world put pressure on their sports people not to participate in sporting events where South Africans took part. It is an example of how the world can join together in a common cause.

It does take one leader to pick up the batten a run with it in much the same way that Jacinda Ardern led the campaign for Social media companies such as Facebook & Twitter to take more responsibility for their content after the Christchurch Mosque shootings.

But this is just not happening, instead the protests have turned into a shouting match rather than a meaningful dialogue. Protesters need to tell the government’s of their respective countries what they would like to happen and politicians must listen because they were voted in to serve us, the citizens.

The “Black Lives Matter” movement since the death of George Floyd, but racial profiling and discrimination is not the only problem facing the US. The inconsistent justice system is another.

A father may be a person who works long hours to provide a better life for his family, but still finds time to come to Little League games and school events. He might teach his children decency, humility or how to drive a stick shift. He might be a man smiling with pride at graduations or shedding a tear at weddings. No matter what, a father generally is someone who will always be there for the people he loves, any way he can.

The least he deserves, it would seem, is a day. Funny thing is, it took a long time for public officials to agree.

The history of Father’s Day

Like rock & roll and the Ford Model T, Father’s Day is an American invention, first observed in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. The first celebration occurred a couple years after the first Mother’s Day and was the inspiration of Sonora Smart Dodd, who listened to a sermon one Sunday about the new day for women and decided there should be something to honor her father, who raised his family alone after his wife died giving birth to their sixth child.

Dodd’s idea quickly gained grassroots support, and while the New York Times reported in 1913 that a bill in Congress sought to recognize Father’s Day, it took more than 50 years for the day to become an official national holiday. While Mother’s Day traces its roots to celebrations for the Virgin Mary from the 16th century, only secular reasons could be offered for Father’s Day. The thinking thus ran for many years that if fathers got their own day, it wouldn’t be long before the calendar was cluttered with frivolous holidays, like Household Pet Day or National Clean Up Your Desk Day.

Eventually, public opinion began to shift. Congress recognized Father’s Day by joint resolution in 1956, though interestingly, the next year, a senator from Maine named Margaret Chase Smith submitted a proposal that read, in part, “Congress has been guilty now for 40 years of the worst possible oversight.” Momentum continued to build, with Lyndon Johnson proclaiming Father’s Day an official national holiday in 1966. Finally in 1972, Richard Nixon signed a law signifying the third Sunday each June as Father’s Day (incidentally, Nixon signed the law the same week as one of the Watergate burglaries.)

What Father’s Day is now

It would appear the worst fears of Father’s Day naysayers are true: We do now have a calendar full of frivolous, trivial holidays. That being said, Father’s Day is not one of them. Unlike many so-called holidays that pass unnoticed every year, like ships in the night, Father’s Day is annually among the most popular secular holidays.

Father’s Day is celebrated in 30 countries, with people spending billions worldwide to give back to their dads. They pay tribute in a variety of ways. Father’s Day might mean a fishing trip or a round of golf or a special meal at a restaurant. It can mean personalized picture frames or “World’s Greatest Dad” mugs or a myriad of other items. More important than the gifts themselves is the sentiments and gratitude they convey.

The sacrifices a father makes can never be fully repaid. The best thing a child can do, perhaps, is to one day make sacrifices for children of their own. That being said, it never hurts to say “Thank you” to a father or to strive to put a smile on his face. Father’s Day is about recognizing those sacrifices and giving dad a break, if only for a day.

It goes without saying that dad deserves for his day to be as special as possible.

It may sound like a made-up number, but Juneteenth actually dates as far back at the mid-nineteenth century, and rightfully so. Each year around the United States, Juneteenth celebrations mark the anniversary of the end of slavery in America – the emancipation of all African peoples brought to this growing country for labor and servitude. Normally celebrated on June 19th, Juneteenth festivities around the US – particularly the southern states – may last as long as week or even the whole month. Fourteen states have officially recognized Juneteenth as an official state holiday.

“Juneteenth” gets its name from a combination of the words “June” and “nineteenth,” as derived from that historical date in 1865. While the Emancipation Proclamation had been put into effect by President Lincoln two years prior, the Civil War still raged through the country, and the Rebel states which had seceded refused to acknowledge it. It took a bloody defeat by Union troops to secure the freedoms of those of African descent, and on the Juneteenth date in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger personally saw to the release of slaves in Galveston Island in Texas. The knowledge that they were finally free sent the now-former slaves into a frenzy of jubilation, and from this joy was born the first Juneteenth.

Since that time, Juneteenth has grown into an annual commemoration of that day, culminating in activities to be enjoyed by all Americans. One might expect to enjoy a variety of ethnic foods at a Juneteenth festival, along with musical acts, games, and reenactments. Where Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday, celebrations might be sponsored by various cities, while other venues around the United States may hold smaller festivals.

Juneteenth, however, is more than an opportunity to celebrate African-American culture. It is also a time of reflection and remembrance. Area churches and libraries may use this time to offer seminars and films about this dark period in our nation’s history, and pay tribute to those who did not live to see the first Juneteenth. Religious services may be held to honor the pioneers who never gave up hope for freedom, and panel discussions may invite all to discuss ways to support African-American fellowship and business. Juneteenth offers the opportunity to connect and strengthen the spirit.

Black, brown or white, these are just colors.
We are more than colors.
We are deeper than colors.
We are more than just a pigment of our skin.
Let us not be defined by the colors.
After all, our color is just a name tag, it is not who we are.
